She encouraged the fashion industry to stand together and show the world that it wasn’t going to put up with the new social agenda. It was a hard move to follow up, but nonetheless an interesting one. As President Trump nears his election date in November and Brexit moves one fresh 2 death fashion step closer, adversaries are faced with avoiding normalisation. What was going to be Mrs Missoni’s message six months on? “This season I’m only gonna have a party,” she said, minutes before her show. “The party for my 20th anniversary!”

She had thought about throwing a Missoni retrospective but with the house’s 65th anniversary coming up next year, that idea was taken. However, as she said, “it’s an important point for a designer, twenty years.” What to do, then? “I said, okay, I’m gonna do a nice party. So those kids are the kids I would like to have at my party,” Missoni explained, gesturing at the runway about to be walked. With a tense soundtrack patch-worked from seconds of party songs of the ages, her girls and boys hit the virtual dance floor in what could best be described as festival clothes: psychedelic takes on the Missoni patterns, sequinned capes and trousers, knitted tracksuits with face motifs, and trendy ankle socks.

Missoni turned up the heat with sparkly swimsuits, a deep-plunging jumpsuit, and a rhinestone bikini before concluding the show with its perhaps most feasible clubwear: a segment of black fishnet-knitted garments adorned with colourful gems until they resembled chainmail. Yasmin Wijnaldum put on her trademark seductive stride in a dress version as Sugababes’ 'Freak Like Me' got its fifteen seconds of airtime on the stereo. If partying it up was an unexpected next step to Missoni’s political resistance last season, it did sum up the mood of the shows in New York, London and Milan this month where escapism has been the go-to reaction to these troubled times.
